The Board of Directors and Council of Trustees of the Global Alliance on Accessible Technologies and Environments (GAATES) are pleased to announce Dr. Victor Pineda as the new GAATES President.
Dr. Pineda previously held the position of 2nd Vice President, and GAATES is pleased to announce his Presidency at a time when GAATES is expanding its global community of members and practitioners in accessibility and Universal Design. As the leading international organization dedicated to the promotion of accessibility of the built, virtual and social environments, GAATES works to improve access for the estimated one billion people with disabilities around the world.
Mukhtar AlShibani, Past President of GAATES, stated, “On behalf of the Board of Directors, I am pleased to pass on the leadership of GAATES to Victor. His passion for promoting full inclusion and implementation of the UN CRPD, along with his leadership experience will enable GAATES to deepen its strong relationships with our partners. This milestone in our growth also signals our commitment to expanding our impact by delivering high quality, practical accessibility and Universal Design solutions around the world.”
Dr. Victor Pineda is the President of World ENABLED, Chancellor’s Research Fellow, and an Adjunct Professor in the Department of City and Regional Planning at the University of California at Berkeley. He is a leading global expert on disability rights, policy, planning and design and has worked closely with the U.S. Department of the Treasury, World Bank, United Nations, UNESCO, and UNICEF, among others. Dr. Pineda is the recipient of a National Science Foundation (NSF) innovative research grant, a Fulbright-Hays Fellowship, the Thomas Jefferson Award, the Tom Clausen Fellowship for Business and Policy, and the Paul G. Hearne Award. Dr. Pineda holds a Ph.D. from the Luskin School for Public Affairs at the University of California at Los Angeles and a Master’s in City and Regional Planning, a B.A. in Political Economy, and a B.S. in Business Administration from the University of California at Berkeley.
Founded in 2007, GAATES mission is to promote the understanding and implementation of accessibility of the sustainable built, social and virtual environments, including architectural, infrastructural design, transportation systems, habitat, and electronic information and communication technologies so that everyone, including people with disabilities and older persons are able to fully participate and contribute to society.
